Exodus 32

Father God, we welcome into your hearts, homes and in every part of our lives In the name of Jesus. Speak to us LORD, reveal Jesus to us as You transform our hearts and minds In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Chapter 31 ended when God had given Moses two tablets of Testimony, tablets of stone written with the finger of God (Exodus 31:18). However, while Moses was on Mt Sinai, receiving these instructions from the LORD, the people decided to make a god for themselves in the form of a gold calf made from their jewellery (Exodus 32:2). Since, they were not sure when Moses would return, they decided to make themselves a god that they would worship. It's interesting to note that Aaron spearheaded this and gave in to pleasing the people despite his knowledge of God. One would imagine He would know better since he spoke on Moses' behalf before Pharaoh, but not exactly. Just like any human, he had his imperfections and he gave into them in the moment.

As much as God personalized His love for the children of Israel by sending manna from heaven, splitting the Red Sea open, these miracles were not enough for them to personalize their love for Him.

Moses' relationship with God illustrates the importance of having a personal relationship with God. If all the children of Israel had a personal revelation of God in their hearts the way Moses knew Him, they would not have created an idol that satisfied their own desires and human understanding. This also shows us that miracles don't have the power to change people's hearts or satisfy our desires, only Jesus can. My prayer for you today is may your relationship with the LORD God grow so much where only the things that make His heart happy are the things that make you happy as well In the name of Jesus.

When the LORD God saw this, it broke His heart that the people would create an idol so fast. He told Moses that He was going to consume them with His anger (Exodus 32:8-10). Moses pleaded with the LORD and asked for the people's repentance. Moses presented his case by telling the LORD, "Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'He. brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains and to consume from the face of the earth?' Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to your people." Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants , to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever." (Exodus 32:12-13). God granted Moses' plea and indeed He forgave the people.

When Moses came down from the mountain, he gave the people a chance and about three thousand people who had refused to repent for the sin they committed against the LORD died that day (Exodus 32:25-28). Interestingly, we also see the number three thousand repeat itself because the LORD God is the God of redemption. In the New Testament, about three thousand people gave their souls to Christ (Acts 2:41) during Peter's sermon after Jesus' ascension to heaven and the Holy Spirit coming upon His people.
