Father, thank you for this day. We praise Your holy name and say may Your Name forever be magnified in all of the earth in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, speak to our hearts and give us understanding aligned to the plans and purposes you have for each person reading and sharing this post in the name of Jesus, Amen.
In my previous post, we saw God's redemption plan achieved through Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. Chapter 11 presents to us different nations that stemmed from Noah and his descendants. Genesis 11:1 (NKJV) specifically says, "Now the whole earth had one language and one speech." The people who had unity of one language come together and decided that they would build a tower.
They said, "Come let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth." (Genesis 11:4). We see the power of language here, the people were in agreement with each other both in speech and with their mind. When the LORD came down to hear what they said, Genesis 11:8 shows us that He confused their languages which scattered them in different parts of the world.
One may wonder the reason God would scatter these people who were planning to do a 'good thing' that is, to build a tower. As seen in previous posts, our heart posture is always important and God is the God of the heart.
This begs the question, whether the tower they planned to build to the heaven tops was glorifying the name of the LORD or was it meant to glorify their own personal interests?
The LORD God in Jeremiah 17:9-10 (NKJV) tells us, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?
I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings."
Interestingly, during their preparations of building the tower, their main intention was to make a name for themselves lest they be scattered all over the earth.
This text also shows us the importance of being mindful of the words that we speak because indeed they were scattered all over the earth as they had spoken.
Genesis 11:9 (NKJV) reads, "Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth."
Prayer: Holy Spirit may you help me align my plans and purposes according to God's heart in the name of Jesus, Amen.
The rest of chapter 11 shows us Shem's genealogy and we see our father of faith, Abraham (who in this chapter is referred to as Abram), descended from Ham's descendants. Abram's father was called Terah. Terah had three sons, Abram, Nahor and Haran (Genesis 11:26 NKJV). Abram was married to Sarai while Nahor was married to Milcah (Genesis 11:29 NKJV). Abram and Sarai had no children while Haran died (Genesis 11:28 NKJV) but had a son, Lot.
Genesis 11:31 (NKJV) tells us, "And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there." However, Abram's father died in Haran (Genesis 11:32) and never made it to Canaan.
Invitation to salvation: Today, God's grace is still available and welcomes all who desire to know His heart of redemption through His one and only Son Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus Christ, every evil imagination of heart and all sins has been conquered on the cross and washed away by His precious blood. If this is you - I invite you to make this confession:
"I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that; Jesus Christ, the Son of God came in a human body to die for my sins so that I could have a new life where I am dead to sin and alive to God. I repent of my past sins and enter the Kingdom of light where I choose relationship with Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour and with God as my loving Father today and forever." AMEN.
I'll end with this Word in Psalm 127:1 (NKJV)
"Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it;
Unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain."
AMEN. THANK YOU LORD.
